Alcohol

April is Alcohol Awareness Month

In 2018, approximately 14.8 million Americans ages 12 and older had an alcohol use disorder. Despite the prevalence of this condition, there is still an unfair stigma around alcohol addiction – a stigma that stops many people from getting treatment.

To help make issues regarding alcohol and alcoholism clearer and less taboo, the National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence has designated April as Alcohol Awareness Month. While the program was originally started in 1987 to address binge drinking on college campuses, it has developed into a nationwide movement that illuminates the causes and effects of alcoholism and helps those struggling get help.

Defeating Denial

Many people who are battling alcoholism underestimate the amount they drink or the seriousness of their problem or overestimate their ability to quit drinking. Those around them sometimes deny the problem, as well, because they are uncomfortable with the reality of the situation or unsure of how to address it properly.

During April, public health organizations across the United States fight this denial with educational efforts and awareness campaigns on social media and traditional platforms.

Resources shared in April can make it easier for those who are struggling to find help and treatment centers. These resources also teach friends, families, and communities how to cope with their loved one’s disease and provide care and support when needed.
