What Is Alcohol Detox?

Detoxification occurs naturally when your body removes waste and toxins from your system. Alcohol detox simply refers to your body removing alcohol from your system. Unfortunately, people who have been drinking heavily may have adapted to having alcohol in their systems, so their brains and bodies may be confused about what to do next.

Alcohol depresses your central nervous system, so heavy alcohol use can cause your body to adapt to central nervous system depression. Once you stop drinking, your body will continue to behave as if it is under a depressant – this is what causes withdrawal symptoms.

Most importantly, alcohol detox is the first step in overcoming alcohol addiction.

What Is Alcohol Detox Like at The Nestled Recovery Center?

At The Nestled Recovery Center, located in the heart of Las Vegas, Nevada, we are committed to assisting individuals on their journey to recovery from alcohol addiction. One question we frequently encounter is, “What is alcohol detox like?” Our aim is to provide a clear and comprehensive understanding of our alcohol detoxification process.

Our alcohol detoxification program at The Nestled Recovery Center is a meticulously structured, medically supervised process, designed to cater to each individual’s unique needs. It begins with an evaluation phase, where our team of addiction specialists assesses the extent of the addiction, the duration of alcohol use, and any co-existing mental or physical health conditions. This assessment lays the foundation for a personalized detoxification plan.

Once the evaluation is complete, the detoxification phase begins. This generally involves managing withdrawal symptoms that occur when alcohol consumption is abruptly stopped. Withdrawal symptoms can range from mild discomfort, like headaches and nausea, to severe complications, such as seizures and delirium tremens. Our medical team is present around the clock to monitor patients, alleviate withdrawal symptoms, and ensure safety throughout the detox process.

What sets alcohol detox at The Nestled Recovery Center apart is our comprehensive approach to recovery. We believe detoxification goes beyond just eliminating alcohol from the body—it’s about nurturing the mind and soul as well. As part of our program, we offer therapies including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and wellness activities such as yoga and nature walks.

However, it’s crucial to understand that detoxification is the first step on the path to recovery from alcohol addiction, not the final destination. After detox, we offer a variety of follow-up treatments including inpatient rehab for alcohol use disorder and ongoing recovery programs to support sustained sobriety and overall well-being.

The detox experience varies for each individual, so this description provides a general overview of what to expect. If you’re considering alcohol detox, we invite you to reach out to The Nestled Recovery Center to discuss your specific needs and circumstances.

What Are the Symptoms of Alcohol Withdrawal?

The symptoms of alcohol withdrawal can begin within 6 hours of your last drink and are most difficult in the first 48 to 72 hours of your sobriety.

Signs and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Shakiness
  • Tremors
  • Exhaustion
  • Mood swings
  • Inability to think clearly
  • Nightmares
  • Dilated pupils
  • Headaches
  • Sweating
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Pale skin
  • Faster heart rate
  • And more

In severe cases of alcohol withdrawal, you may experience hallucinations or see and hear things that aren’t there. Some people describe feeling like bugs are crawling on their skin.

What Are Delirium Tremens (DTs)?

Hallucinations are a key symptom of delirium tremens (DTs). DTs is a severe form of alcohol withdrawal and the result of a sudden change to your nervous system. You are more likely to develop DTs if you have been drinking excessively (1.8-2.4 liters of wine, 3.3-3.8 liters of beer, or 0.5 liters of hard alcohol) every day for several months, or if you have been using alcohol regularly for more than 10 years.

Symptoms of DTs:

  • Delirium (sudden severe confusion)
  • Body tremors
  • Changes in mental function
  • Agitation and irritability
  • Deep sleep (that lasts for 1 or more days)
  • Stupor, sleepiness, or fatigue
  • Excitement or fear
  • Bursts of energy
  • Hallucinations
  • Quick mood changes
  • Restlessness
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, and touch
  • Fever
  • High blood pressure
  • Seizures

Left untreated, DTs can become fatal. Seizures can occur with or without other symptoms of DTs and are most often generalized tonic-clonic seizures, or grand mal seizures, that involve the entire body.

DTs is most common in the first 12 to 48 hours after your last drink, and it may be difficult to predict.

To mitigate and manage withdrawal symptoms, you need to pursue the appropriate treatment.
